Knit Socks - Two at a Time, From the Toe Up
Come learn how to make two socks at a time, from the toe up, with Tracy. Try on your socks as you go and never experience second sock syndrome again!
Socks are one of those portable projects that you can have on hand to grab and go at any time. Why not make it so that when you’re done with the project you’re actually done? No single sock hanging around for ages waiting for its mate.
In this class you’ll learn:
-
Judy’s Magic Cast On
-
How to knit two socks at a time on Magic Loop
-
How to knit socks from the toe up
-
Afterthought heel technique
In the first session, we will cover Judy’s Magic Cast On and get started knitting the toe of our socks. In the second class, we’ll cover how to prepare for your afterthought heels and talk about finishing the leg of your socks. In the third class, we'll go over picking up for your heels and how to finish them off with Kitchener stitch.
Homework will be required in between classes. There is a whole month in between each session to make sure everyone is in the same spot when we meet up so we can all work through our socks together.
This is a class to learn how to knit socks two socks at a time using the Magic Loop technique - if you don't know how to do Magic Loop but you're adventurous and willing to feel fumbly for a bit as you learn, join us!
MATERIALS: For this project, you’ll need:
-
400 yards of fingering weight yarn (1 100g skein), split into two even balls (50g/200yds each) - Tracy strongly recommends Vesper Sock from Knitterly Things and Alder from Round Mountain Fibers
-
US size 1 40” circular needles
-
Tapestry needle
-
A copy of Trusty Toe Up Socks by Tanis Lavallee, available free on Ravelry
- a bit of scrap fingering weight yarn in a contrasting color
The only pre-work necessary for class is to prep your yarn into two even 50g/200yds balls so we can get right to casting on when we get together. Don’t worry if they’re not exact, just get close enough!
We request you purchase your yarns, needles (that you don’t already have), etc. at Yarns in the Farms for this class. Mention you're enrolled in class and receive a 10% discount on your materials. Want to purchase your supplies online? Send us an email and we'll send you a coupon code to use on our website.
A minimum of 3 participants is required for this class to run - bring a friend!
Skill Level: | Beginner |
Skill Details: | Must know how to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, knit a small circumference in the round (magic loop preferred), increase, and decrease. |
Instructor: | Tracy |
Instructor Bio: | Tracy has been at Yarns in the Farms for over nine years now - how time flies. Her aunt taught her to knit when she was a teenager and she really only started making sweaters about 6 years ago. Her annual Christmas hat tradition just keeps growing, which means she should really start knitting them in July but still has not learned her lesson. Half her handknits can be found residing at the shop at any given time and someday her unfinished WIP bin will be empty (maybe?). |
