Mosaic Madness KAL

Summer is almost here and we're gearing up for another knit-a-long (KAL) to keep us stitching through the warmer months.

Join us to make one of Savory Knitting/Amy Christoffers' mosaic knit garments.

Amy's designs are perennial favorites in the knitting world, and for good reason. We've chosen her designs specifically because she has 6 different, self-published, mosaic knit garments in various weights of yarn, giving all of us a lot of options to choose from.

We're super excited to knit these garments with all of you. All the options are shown below with links to their Ravelry pages so you can scope them out to find your perfect match. [NB: Be sure you pay attention to the yarn weights and needle sizes so you don't wind up falling in love with something knit in sport-weight on size 5 needles when you only like to knit with worsted-weight on a size 7 or 8.]

Sizes in these garments range from high 30 inches to low-mid 70 inches bust circumference, something for nearly everyone.

Techniques to try out in these garments include:

  • Top-down or bottom-up knitting (depending on the design)
  • Mosaic knitting and chart reading
  • Circular or Raglan yokes
  • Knitting flat and in the round
  • Picking up stitches (for cardigan button bands)
  • Making buttonholes (for cardigans)
  • Short rows (for some designs)

These sweaters are definitely geared towards more intermediate knitters. We strongly recommend this KAL for those of you who have an understanding of basic sweater construction and knitting so you can overlay the new-to-you techniques on your current knowledge.

By the end, you'll have a gorgeous sweater that's ready to wear everywhere you go!

It is recommended that you at least have your gauge swatch sorted out for our first get-together so we can all get going right away.

We will meet 3 weeks in a row in the beginning to make sure that everyone is well-established on their project at the outset. Then we'll meet 3 times every other week after that for check-ins, cheerleading, and moral support.

Your options for garments are:

Things you will need:
  • enough yarn for your chosen pattern and size
  • the appropriate size needles (and lengths!) to meet gauge on your pattern
  • stitch markers
  • darning needle
  • a can-do attitude!

We request you purchase your yarns, needles (that you don't already have), etc. at Yarns in the Farms for this KAL so we can continue to offer you the very best in yarns, notions, classes, and services.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: This is an intermediate level project. You must know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, knit in the round, knit a small circumference in the round, and bind off. Knowledge of mosaic knitting technique and chart reading will also be helpful but is not a prerequisite - we can help with that!
