Introduction to Stranded Knitting

Colorwork? Stranded knitting? Fair Isle? What’s the difference?

Colorwork is when you use more than one color in a pattern, stranded knitting is when you knit with more than one color per row at the same time, and Fair Isle is a stranded knitting style that only comes from Fair Isle in Scotland (so unless that Fair Isle sweater in your closet came straight from the Shetland Islands, it’s really more accurate to call it a stranded sweater).

Come learn how to knit a stranded pattern with Louise.

As part of this class, we’ll be using Version 4 of the “Sketchbook Hat” pattern and Lanas Light yarns from Berroco. This pattern is a six in one! And the book includes a blank chart page so you can even design your own colorwork pattern when you’re ready.

In this class you’ll learn:

  • How to read a colorwork chart

  • Choosing colors for a colorwork project

  • How to knit with two colors at a time, one in each hand

  • How to maintain tension in your stranded pattern

Once you’ve tackled this project, you’ll be ready to take on any other stranded knitting pattern your heart desires.

Before the first class, please cast on and complete the ribbing for your hat so you can jump right into the technique. In between sessions, you’ll knit more of the body of the hat and then tackle decreases in the second meeting.

MATERIALS: For this project, you’ll need:

  • 3 skeins of Berroco Lanas Light (sport weight)

  • US size 2 16” needles

  • US size 3 16” needles

  • US size 3 double pointed needles (DPNs) or other US size 3 needles for preferred method of small circumference knitting

  • Stitch markers (one in a contrasting color, 4 total)

  • Tapestry needle
